Agios Nikolas (also spelt Ayios Nikolas and Agios Nikolaos – the name means “St Nicholas”) is a pretty harbour town on the eastern coast of Crete, perennially popular with UK holidaymakers. The appeal of the town is easy to see: a beautiful harbour, pedestrianised streets, clean beaches, a small lagoon and plenty of traditional fishing boats. The elegant town is one of the most popular resorts in Crete yet it still retains sophistication and charm. Indeed, the resort is also popular with Greek holidaymakers, who arrive here in large numbers during August.
There are no direct flights to Agios Nikolas, but it’s possible to catch a connection from Heraklion, or to get a ferry to the island. Aside from the beautiful beaches, and thriving nightlife, many tourists visit for the sightseeing. Top of the list is Spinalonga, a fortified islet that was once a leper colony.
